is a medium that encourages the development of communication in children and adults who suffer from a broad spectrum of developmental difficulties. Makaton uses signs and symbols that accompany and support language and literacy skills.

The primary aim of Makaton is the development of the understanding and use of language. It provides people with developmental difficulties in communication and speech to refine these abilities and use them with a simple but very effective way in order to be able to participate and enjoy social life, to have choices and to claim their rights.

It may be applied to every environment (in school, at home, at the work environment). The teaching approach of Makaton focuses at the acquisition of basic communication and language skills before proceeding to reading and writing.
